Born in Paris, Henri-Philippe, marquis de Ségur served as secretary of state for war under king louis XVI. He improved the education of officers and founded the light artillery and headquarters corps, thus preparing the way for the future success of the French armies during the revolution of 1789.A marshal of France, de Ségur was imprisoned during the terror, then restored to his rank by napoléon I. His Mémoires were published in 1895.
